Destination :Munnar

A must do day trip from Munnar is a visit to the Marayoor region which is north of Munnar along the Munnar Udumalpet road which goes to Coimbatore. As you leave Munnar town you pass by Rajamalai, the entry point to Eravikulam national park, where you can go to see the Nilgiri Tahr and Anaimudi the highest peninsular Indian mountain, if lucky. Unfortunately there is too long a queue most of the time so a lot of people skip this visit. After this the road passes through the most scenic areas of Talaiyar, Nyamakad and Gundamalai tea estates, deep valleys all ringed by high mountains. You can take short walks through the tea paths wherever it is unfenced. The Lukkom falls come on the way. At Marayoor you will find a patch of dense sandalwood forests which are fenced in to prevent vandalism. Then comes a side road to Kovilkadavu the home of the Muniyara prehistoric dolmens. The entire hillside and valley are covered in these dolmens and it is a good trek for those who are interested. If you proceed further you will enter the dense deciduous Chinnar sanctuary going upto and beyond the Tamil nadu border. At Alampetty just after Marayur you can engage a forest guide and do a short trek to Thoovanam falls or to some more prehistoric sites. Wildlife sighting is high on the Chinnar section. All in all an excellent day trip from Munnar. Normal Sight seeing places: Hydal Park, Tea Measum, Eravikulam National park, Flower garden, Mattupetty Dam, Elephant arrival spot, Boating, Elephant safari, Echo point, Kundala Dam.
